THE BACK STORY
The Foster War Memorial and Arts Centre, formerly Foster Mechanics’ Institute, was established in 1871 and has been serving our community for 154 years. When the Institute building was severely damaged by fire in 1962, it was demolished and replaced with the current building in 1966.
In February 1964, a Special General Meeting was held, and the following was recorded:
The Foster War Memorial Arts Centre shall have for its objects:
(a) The construction and maintenance of a building and grounds with its equipment and facilities to commemorate and perpetuate the memory of the service men and women who enlisted from the foster district and those who gave their lives in the service of their country in the wars 1914/1918 and 1939/1945.
(b) The intellectual advancement, recreation and amusement of the community generally.
Now known as 'The Hall' to locals, it has been the venue for many wonderful productions, ceremonies and celebrations over the years.

Any community needs a space in which to gather, and The Hall is the largest facility of its kind in the district. Various community groups take advantage of some of its smaller spaces adjoining the auditorium, such as the very active U3A that holds regular groups, dances, classes and workshops.

With the recent release of the Strategic Plan, the Committee of Management is keen to get feedback from the community about how this important community asset might continue to serve those who live in the area, working with the same intention laid down in 1964.
